Projecting the Final 53

Offense 25

Quarterback 3
On the Roster
Matt Hasselbeck, Seneca Wallace, Mike Teel
Cut
     Jeff Rowe
Comments: this is a no brainer these are the best three on the roster.

Running Back 3

On the Roster
Julius Jones, Edgerrin James, Justin Forsett
Cut
     Devin Moore
Comments: this one was kind of tuff for me I really like Moore, I think he is stronger, faster and more durable than Forsett but Forsett has an ability to make things happen at times, hopefully Moore can make it to the practice squad.

Full Back 2

On the Roster
     Justin Griffith, Owen Schmitt
Cut
     David Kirtman
Comments: no comments necessary, this is the easiest decision to make.

Wide Receiver 5

On the Roster
TJ Houshmandzadeh, Nate Burleson, Deion Branch, Deon Butler, Ben Obumonu
Cut
Jordan Kent, Mike Hass, Courtney Taylor, Logan Payne
Comments: tuff choice on that 5th spot, but I believe Obumonu brings more to the table than Taylor he can play all 3 positions and is a solid special teams guy, and if the team decides to keep 6 Taylor will be that 6th guy.

Offensive Line 9

On the Roster
Walter Jones, Sean Locklear, Kyle Williams, Rob Simms, Steve Vallos, Max Unger, Chris Spencer,       Mansfield Wroto, Ray Willis
Cut
Will Robinson, Brian De La Puente, Andre Ramsey, NaShan Goddard
Comments: I think the cuts are easy here so to comment on the guys that stay, the starters from L-R Locklear, Simms, Vallos, Unger, Willis for opening day with Big Walt still recovering when Walt comes back I think the starters will be from L-R Jones, Simms, Vallos, Locklear, Willis. I really like Vallos at center he reminds me of Tobeck, a little undersized and at times will have troble pushing bigger DT’s but seems to be able to stand his ground, I like Kyle Williams size, footwork and initial push this decision for me is based more on last season than what he has done this year yet.

Tight End 3

On the Roster
John Carlson, Jon Owens, Joe Newton
Cut
     Cameron Morrah
Comments: Morrah had his chance but has looked lackluster in pre-season.

Defense 25

Line Backers 6

On the Roster
Leroy Hill, Will Herring, Lofa Tatupu, David Hawthorne, Aarron Curry, DD Lewis
Cut
     David Phillistin, Lance Laury
Comments: easy decisions to make here, I would love to keep Laury, he is a beast on special teams, but I think Nick Reed will take his spot and fill in admirably.

Corner Back 4

On the Roster
Ken Lucas, Marcus Trufaunt, Kelly Jennings, Josh Wilson
Cut
Kevin Hobbs, Marquis Floyd, Travis Fisher
Comments: if Marcus is on the PUP list to start the season Hobbs will be the fill in, but Babinaux will take the on field duties in nickel and dime.

Safety 5

On the Roster
Deon Grant, Jordan Babinaux, Brian Russell, CJ Wallace, Jamar Adams
Cut
     Courtney Green, Nate Ness
Comments: easy cut and both should be on the practice squad.

Defensive Line 10

On the Roster
Patrick Kearny, Daryl Tapp, Nick Reed, Colin Cole, Red Bryant, Brandon Mebane, Craig Terrill, Mike Bennett, Cory Redding, Lawrence Jackson
Cut
     Baraka Atkins, Derreck Walker
Comments: Bennett and Reed have muddied the waters here but can’t be left of the game day roster, the only other possibility is if they decide to only keep 9 Terrill will probably be the one cut due to the flexibility of the other guys.

Special Teams 3

Place kicker 1

On the Roster
     Olindo Mare
Cut
     Brandon Coutu
Comments: field position makes this decision, both are solid field goal kickers but Mare’s length on kickoffs sets him apart either way the Hawks and another team will have a solid kicker on their roster as both will be on an opening day roster.

Punter 1
     Jon Ryan
Comments: possible pro-bowl punter

Long Snapper 1
     Kevin Houser
Comments: seems to be a solid snapper as we have not heard his name in any pre-season action.

Bumpus Cut - Your Thoughts

Michael Bumpus didn't make it this year. That means one of two things; the team did not find the potential this year that they saw in him last year, or they are cutting him first, trying to make it look like they don't want him, so they can sneek him back over to the practice squad. A gamble to be sure, if that is the tactic.

Personally, I saw Michael step up and perform last year, until he broke a finger (I think it was) when we needed receivers, badly. He showed some potential, but given the depth we obtained this year (can you say Housh your mama - Houshmandzadeh), it was pretty obvious he would not make the 53-man roster.

If not destined for our practice squad, then here's to hoping he lands on his feet. There are teams in need of receivers this season. Thank goodness the Hawks do not seem to be one of them.
